ALFOLÍ

This situated in Mayor Street at the junction of Mayor Square in Naval. It was the main salt storage in olden times, and was filled with the salt extracted from the salt flats. It dates from the 13th century, when King Jaime I (Aragon’s King) granted Naval the monopoly of salt sales in most of the province on the 18th of June of 1274. The salt stock became the most important commodity firstly for the Aragonese Crown and later for the Spanish Crown which continued until 1870. We can compare the economic and political importance of the salt in that time with the importance of petrol today.
The building is rectangular in shape and made of ashlar stone. It has four main spaces. The main area has big and strong columns decorated with wood. They have been recently dated to the 4th century and it is believed they come from an old castle in the area.
